While they don't (yet?) have a book about Hollis, Arcadia Publishing has some books about the history of towns in the region. I thought one in particular was quite interesting. Simply titled "Nashua", the book traces the history of our neighboring town. It has a series of "then and now" photos which are fun to peruse. Even better, their site offers a free google preview of the book.

I recently came across the Benson's Animal Farm group on Facebook and, man, it brought back some good (and bad) memories. There's even a link to a Benson's website! I remember going there yearly when Sanders (my mom's employer) offered a family outing day. I remember going another time and a llama sneezed in my face. I have not liked this animal since.
Then I remembered popping the new Dane Cook DVD, Rough Around the Edges: Live from Madison Square Garden, in the player over a year ago and almost wetting my pants. Check some of the material out on YouTube and ENJOY!:

OK, so this is from back in November '07, but it's still exciting!

The Hollis was featured in the New York Times! The dump of all things, of course. Apparently, there was controversy surrounding the decision to limit the time people are allowed to hang out at the town dump. Makes us sound like we enjoy picking trash! I guess we can put a "green" spin on it, that we all like to recycle.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL FROM FLORIDA!

An interesting story goes with this photo: Mike and I were going for a walk on Clearwater Beach and happened to notice this sandcastle. It turns out a man was building this with the candy canes atop and was planning on bringing his girlfriend down to propose. He gladly snapped the photo for us. Later, on the return of our walk, we saw them celebrating with champagne. Congrats, anonymous couple!

Facebook is the new reunion.com...so to speak! There has been a flurry of activity on Facebook, with HBHSers connecting left and right.
Jen Beaudry of class of '94 (correct me if I'm wrong...) is organizing a reunion for HBHSers over the Thanksgiving weekend. Go to the Facebook group she created, HBHS Thanksgiving Reunion.

Thought I would peruse the Nashua Telegraph site this morning and found a great news clipping! "Beaver Brook adds acres with two more parcels", reads the headline. And a large two parcels at that! The article states that the two parcels add 500 acres in Hollis and 190 acres in Milford to the association. These easements protect the land from development for more than 100 years. Great news for the trees!

I feel like a perpetual student. I live with someone and it's going well. I'm a mortgage banker and have been for what seems like forever now. My 2nd home is the gym. I am in the process of trying to sell my condo. I love it, it's in an old mill building, but the oddest thing happened: my relationship is progressing and we're moving on to the next step; so on to bigger and better things (I hope). Sam McElroy sent me this message a few weeks ago (Sorry, I don't check my yahoo mail often enough!):
"I'm sorry to bring you bad news, but thought it important to get the word out. We had a faculty meeting at HBHS yesterday morning and I learned that Carol Dochstader has terminal cancer. Her doctor has given her three months to live. She's currently living in Texas and is welcoming letters, cards, inspirational readings, prayers, etc. I know I sought and valued her guidance during high school and plan to send her a letter and thought others from our class might do so. Her address is: Carol Dochstader..."

Chris Oliver: Sculptor

Belated congrats to Chris Oliver for winning the 2005 Outstanding Student Achievement in Comtemporary Sculpture Award from the International Sculpture Center (the publisher of "Scupture" Magazine). This is his award-winning piece above, titled "Accretion with Carport".

His artist's statement reads: "My work is about the creation, evolution, and perception of built places. The way that buildings grovel and decay is my primary source material. Inspired by vernacular carpentry, I create spatial networks that grow from a central core. Each structure is sheathed with a translucent skin of wood. This work must be explored like a vast attic that is too condensed to physically enter: one stands on tiptoe to peer over it or crouches to see under it, attempting to make sense of a space that suggests a roofscape or the interior of a machine."

Chris earned his MFA in Sculpture from SUNY-Albany in 2005. Go Chris!

A warm welcome to Danielle Leighann Babcack (AKA Dani), daughter of Adrienne Gross Babcock and her husband. Dani arrived on April 4, 2007, at 6:07 AM. She weighed 9 pounds 4 oz and was 22.5” long.

From Adrienne: "A little over a month has passed, and Dani is doing very well. She changes daily and is just so much fun to watch. She is now closer to 11 pounds and growing fast!" (Sorry, Adrienne did send this back on May 10th and I just haven't checked my Yahoo account...)

Found a few tidbits on Stacy Kukura this morning. As Jim had found before, it appears that Stacy and her husband David were expecting last October. Congrats! It looks like they have settled in the Chicago area.
This photo was from a golf tournament (obviously) back in 2002:

That's David on the right, I presume.
All the other bits I found were a bit dated, but interesting nonetheless! Looks like Stacy was working at BankOne as the Vice President of Global Treasury Services back in 2004. There is a copy of a presentation she gave while in that capacity HERE. Stacy, if you're out there, we'd love to see your little one!

Yes, that's Margaret Wheeler from the Pro Guiding website where she works as a ski mountaineering and rock climbing guide. Wow! Cool! It says on the site that "Margaret is one of two women in the US who is a UIAGM certified mountain guide." You go!
It looks like Margaret gave an apparel review in '06 for Backcountry Magazine. Go HERE for the profile and interview (and another recent pic).

"Well, it appears that Jim found me on the Babies R Us site. How’s that for the power of the Internet?? I am due around April 19th with a little girl. We are very, very excited as are her two older brothers, Shaun and Dylan (ages 7 and 5).

I am still working from home as an AVP for Countrywide Home Loans. I design statement layouts and write/edit borrower communications. Telecommuting is the best! Great schedule flexibility to make it to events for the little guys.

It looks like I will get to see Clancey in April when she comes out to visit family – I will try to send pictures. So many things too look forward to this spring!

Attached is the most recent 3-D ultrasound pic I have of our little one at about 30 weeks…technology is such a cool thing."

"I am a Property Manager in Nashua for Deb Gregg's dad. Small world huh? I have been married since 09/29/00 and we own a home in Nashua. I attended USM in Portland Maine and lived up there for a bit. I was bored and away from my family so I moved to Mass. for a bit and then back to NH. I have been here ever since. I see Chris Carney, Nate Neveu and Forrest from time to time. I just ran into Butch Valley and his newborn baby last night at Target. How is that for a small world?...I will get back to you with pics."
It is great to hear from you Kristie! We hope you do send some pix. Interestingly, Kristie is one of the most asked about people. For some reason, it seems like so many people ask me, "Gail, have you heard from Kristie?" Now I can say YES!

Things have been a little slow on the blog of late (as they have been at work for me). So I thought I'd put some old classmates' names in the Babies-R-Us registry finder and see what came up (sounds strange, I know, but it's not *so* different from Googling people, is it?) Things are great on our end - we're digging out from a snowstorm (four inches - the Seattle area grinds to a halt with this much snow; back in New England we can handle four inches in our sleep!). I've started a side business on eBay buying and selling classical music recordings, and Simone is now 14 months old! She can talk up a storm (she knows about 40 words), and while she's still primarily a crawler, she's taken a few steps here and there. Mostly, she's just a happy, active little girl! I just read about this on the Hollis town site: Hollis now has its own public access channel!! Wow! Took a few years, huh?
Here's are the scheduled programs. Looks like a LOT of programming is devoted to Beaver Brook. Oh yeah, and the Christian Lighthouse Fellowship. Come on--there is more that the town has to offer!! Where are the local Waynes and Garths?? (Does that show our age?)

Aaron Morgan...remember Aaron from 6th grade?...has launched his site. You will remember him from elementary and some junior high school. He ended up going to New Canaan, NH for high school and then moving down to the Tampa area in Florida. (Incidentally, very close to where I now live!)
Well, he is quite musically inclined and some of his work is featured on the site. Great work Aaron! He is also a proficient tattoo artist, and he pictures some of his designs there.

Coach K, 1940-2006

Thanks to Laurel for posting this on the HBHS 93 yahoo group - Lou Korcoulis, better known as Coach K or simply Coach, passed away Saturday, March 4 of cancer at age 65. He was an icon at our school and in the community, someone I will always remember as upbeat, positive and full of boundless enthusiasm. Even though I was often among the slowest and least athletically gifted students in his phys ed classes, he always made me feel like I was worth something, like I could do it. I remember him encouraging me as I struggled to run a mile or do 50 sit-ups, and his support often gave me the extra push I needed to get it done.

I'm sure there are many stories and fond memories out there from our classmates, especially those who worked with him as a track coach and mentor. He will be missed. My condolences go out to his family, and to all who knew him and worked with him over the years.

Ryan sent this letter from Coach over to me (It was shared with the current students.):

"Coach wanted to let you know what is happening with his health. His most important words were I do not want the kids to be upset but I want to be honest with them. This is what coach wanted me to tell you: I have a reoccurring cancer that has come back. Right now my health is somewhat weak but I am determined and strong and I want you to know I will fight this. I have a lot going my way, I am thankful for my faith in God, I am thankful for the support of my family, friends and my kids at Hollis Brookline High School. I want to thank you all for all your cards, prayers and many kind words. I want you to know I am going to have a tough battle ahead, but I am going to fight this! I do not want you to dwell on sadness that will not help. I believe in the incredible power of the mind and we need to be positive. Positive emotions have a significant effect on how we see the world and what we do with ourselves. Everything happens for a reason, nothing by chance, they all occur to test the limits of our soul.
So I am looking for your support and positive energy, and I am expecting you to use this energy and let other students who are not here, know how strong and determined I am. I would like you guys to continue to work your hardest in academics, keep in shape, as the spring track season is right around the corner. Aww, I'll give the ol' blog some love.

I've found a couple of things by googling spouses' names. Here is a photo blog run by Jenn's husband Erik - there are some pictures of Jenn if you go back a couple of pages. Lots of pics of their cats, too.

I had found a picture in a newsletter of Ann, her husband Joel, and their two kids, but the link is broken now. He's a family physician in the Concord, NH area. I also found this transcript of a radio interview he did with NH Public Radio - if you scroll about 2/3 of the way down, it says "Lowne's wife is pregnant..." - looks like they're expecting (or have had) baby no. 3! (the interview is from December 2005)

Lastly, a little plug for me: I've started a blog of my own. Nothing, really... just some random musings and tracking the progress of my latest weight loss routine. And I'm updating my website fairly regularly - check for the last pics of Simone (she's 5 months old today - how time flies!)

We're delighted to announce the arrival of our beautiful new daughter, Simone Graciela Springborn Brannigan! Simone was born on Tuesday, September 13, at 5:54 AM - she weighed in at 7 pounds, 7 ounces and measured 20 inches in length. She has dark blue eyes (though most babies tend to have blue eyes to start, so we'll see how they turn out), a fair amount of brown hair, and is generally a happy, healthy baby! Labor lasted just under 9 hours and went very smoothly, with no interventions - our midwife, doula, and labor nurse were a pleasure to work with.

We're slowly adjusting to the challenges of first-time parenthood - it really is a lot of work, and sleep is at a premium! But we're loving every minute of it, and we're enjoying watching Simone grow every day :) These are a couple of our favorite photos, and while our website is currently not updated (as of 9/27), we're hoping to get more pictures of her up there in the next few weeks.

April 9th my wife gave birth to triplets! I'll put photos up on a website somewhere when I get a chance between feedings for anybody who is interested. Our son, Owen Donald was born at 3 lbs 4 ounces. Daughter #1, Arden Marie, was 3 lbs 8 ounces, and daughter #2, Morgan Olivia, was 2 lbs 13 ounces. They all showed up for the party a bit early, but everybody is healthy. My yahoo address tends to bounce a lot, because I pretty much never check it. I guess it has been a while... There has been a lot that has happened in our lives since the reunion! We now own our own house (or the small percentage of it that isn't mortgaged...) and bigger yet, we have a daughter! I've attached a photo of her from mid-May in one of her many Red Sox outfits (since she was born right after they won the World Series, we got quite a few of them as gifts). Her name is Emma. I took a long, 6 mo maternity leave and have been back in lab for about 2 months now. Hope to finish my thesis work by the end of next summer... I heard about your move to FL from Tamra when she came to visit back in September. I heard from her briefly after they moved to their new house, but that was several months ago. Got an email from Adrienne that she is now engaged. I think that's all the news I have from others.-- Tina

I guess I should also add an update about me. I am no longer in NYC, but have moved down to the Sunshine State (that's Florida!). I've been here for about a year now. I moved just in time for the terrific hurricane season last year. Fortunately, I picked the Tampa/St Pete area, which wasn't really hit--yes, some heavy, heavy rain and strong wind, but nothing like south or north of here. We'll see what the next few months bring...
What else? Hmmm....I am living with my boyfriend Mike who I met on a cruise last year. Heh, who would think you could meet someone on a cruise? And I was with my family! I guess I figured that if he wasn't scared after seeing my drunk mother join the guitarist/singer onstage in front of a crowd, then he must be OK!
I am still working on beinghunted with exchange student Joerg from Junior Year. And I have a few ideas in the pipeline.

Brief synopsis of the time since the reunion: we’ve been hard at work tweaking and remodeling our house. My parents moved out here to WA in June 2004 – they’re really enjoying it and it’s been nice having them close. I’m back in the technology field, doing software testing – a big step up careerwise. And last but certainly not least, we’re expecting our first child in September – the 8th to be exact. We’re super excited and we can’t wait – time has already gone so fast! Lyn -- Back in the USofA!

Yes, that's correct folks. Lyn Baranowski has returned to the States after her 2 year tenure in Basel, Switzerland. She has landed in the New York area--in Jersey City. She continues to work for Novartis, where she was working in the EU.
Her big news is that she is in the process of buying a new apartment, a lovely 1-bedroom. Yes, this may sound small to you suburbanites, but in the metropolitan area, space is a commodity, and this looks to be a terrific purchase.
Photos are spread out in the next posts (sorry, this is the easiest and prettiest way to show them...) but this isn't Lyn's stuff, as these are the realtor pix. (Nice views outside, huh?)
